Overview

Legacy’s 8-12 year old classes are separated into 2 groups: Beginner/Intermediate and Advanced. The beginner 8-12 year old student will be introduced to the Tang Soo Do curriculum in a one on one or small group environment. This allows the beginner student to develop a strong grasp of the fundamentals of this martial art.

The beginner will stay with the group during the stretching portion of the class. Then will be moved off to the side to work on beginner material. At this beginning stage the student will also learn the etiquette of the gym which includes how to enter the training hall, how to address instructors and seniors, how to enter the training hall if coming in after class has started and how to line up in the beginning and ending of class. Developing discipline and respect starts from the very beginning of the students training.

The beginner curriculum for promotion and advancement (moving through the belt system) includes: opening exercises, one step sparring, self defense, forms (hyungs), sparring and sparring drills.

Beginner students can start their training at any time. Contact us for more information and to schedule your complimentary trial class.

Students that train on a consistent basis (at least two or more times per week) can be in a position to test for black belt somewhere between 3.5 and 4 years. The exception to this would be students starting in our 4-7 year old program. Since these are younger students the normal curriculum is spread out over a longer period of time for ease of teaching and better retention of the material.

Karate is an excellent mental and physical activity for people of all ages. Students can simply do what they are able to do given their own physical condition and abilities. There is no pressure to go beyond what you can safely achieve. You will improve your strength, balance, flexibility, endurance, and self-confidence through your participation in karate training.

Consistency is important in any activity. Training a minimum of 2 times a week is important for students to get the most out of the program and their development.

Sign ups are perpetual. You can start at any time.

Although in any physical activity there is a chance of injury, Legacy Karate trains our students in a very structured environment. Special care is given during instructing students and all components of the beginner’s training is supervised by qualified instructors.

Sparring is an important part of any Martial Arts training. However, for the younger students (4-7 year old students) sparring is not introduced into their curriculum until a strong foundation has been established with the beginning material. This is usually around 9 months into training. For the older students 8+, sparring is introduced around 1-2 months into training once the basics are retained. It is important to understand that the sparring component of class is introduced as the sport part of the art that is taught and is only practiced while being supervised by a certified instructor.
