Legacy Karate Academy at the Spring Valley YMCA

The Spring Valley YMCA has partnered with Legacy Karate Academy to provide a Martial Arts program at our Y! Legacy Karate has been providing the highest quality Martial Arts training in the Limerick, Collegeville, Royersford area for the last 20 years. Training will focus on the traditional martial art of Tang Soo Do with an emphasis on improving self-discipline, focus, flexibility, balance, agility, and body control. The skills learned in a traditional karate class transfer easily to anyone looking to enhance their training in other sports. Class components include, but are not limited to, the following: onestep fighting, forms, self-defense, kicking and kicking drills, sparring and flexibility training. Classes are taught by Grand Master Eric Versland, 7th Degree Black Belt and Mr. Jonathan Amanto, 4th Degree Black Belt.

The cost for lessons is dependent on which membership program you select (month to month, 6-month, and 12-month). We discuss these options with you in person so we may thoroughly explain all aspects of our curriculum. Please call us at 610-792-9091 set up an appointment.

Students that train on a consistent basis (at least two or more times per week) can be in a position to test for black belt somewhere between 3.5 and 4 years. The exception to this would be students starting in our 4-7 year old program. Since these are younger students the normal curriculum is spread out over a longer period of time for ease of teaching and better retention of the material.

Yes, Legacy Karate offers a complimentary class before you decide on joining. Just fill out the form on the home page to secure and schedule your trial class.

Karate is an excellent mental and physical activity for people of all ages. Students can simply do what they are able to do given their own physical condition and abilities. There is no pressure to go beyond what you can safely achieve. You will improve your strength, balance, flexibility, endurance, and self-confidence through your participation in karate training.

Consistency is important in any activity. Training a minimum of 2 times a week is important for students to get the most out of the program and their development.

Sign ups are perpetual. You can start at any time.

Although in any physical activity there is a chance of injury, Legacy Karate trains our students in a very structured environment. Special care is given during instructing students and all components of the beginner’s training is supervised by qualified instructors.

Legacy Karate Academy teaches the art of Tang Soo Do a South Korean Martial Art.

Legacy Karate has been a part of the community for over 20 years. We believe in giving back to the community and are heavily involved in Charity work. Grand Master Versland has been training for over 43 years and has instructed over 2,000 students during that time and teaches many of the classes on the schedule. We believe in teaching and training in a safe, family training environment.

Testing for students under Black Belt are held March, June, September and December. Black Belt testing is held twice a year (June and December). Testing candidates should not only have a solid grasp on the testing material but should also attend at least 2 classes per week.

Absolutely, Legacy Karate would like all of our potential students to understand how the program works and develop a comfort level with the training environment.

Sparring is an important part of any Martial Arts training. However, for the younger students (4-7 year old students) sparring is not introduced into their curriculum until a strong foundation has been established with the beginning material. This is usually around 9 months into training. For the older students 8+, sparring is introduced around 1-2 months into training once the basics are retained. It is important to understand that the sparring component of class is introduced as the sport part of the art that is taught and is only practiced while being supervised by a certified instructor.

Yes, we do karate birthday parties for students as well as non-students. Birthday parties can be scheduled on Friday nights, Saturday afternoons and any time on Sundays. Two weeks advanced noticed for scheduling is required. Get more information on our birthday parties on the home page.

Absolutely, Parents are more than welcome to stay and watch class especially when children are beginner students however it is not required. Please know your children will be safe and no one leaves our facility without being accompanied by a parent or loved one. No student will be released to anyone other than parents or family unless Legacy is notified in advance.

NO, we do not have contracts. Legacy Karate Academy offers 3 different membership programs: month to month, 6-month, and 12-month. A 30 day written notice is required to discontinue training.
